The Wolf Among us Episodes 4 & 5

This morning I woke up, got my coffee and sat down to run a back-to-back play session with the final two episodes of Wolf Among Us. The scrape-up with Bloody Mary and the Crooked Man at the end of episode 3 has left the Big Bad Wolf battered and broken with a silver bullet in his gut. The question of how to approach the final challenges of the series becomes a central theme, as Bigby is...

The Walking Dead Season 2: In Harm’s Way

Things take a turn for the truly dark in the third episode of season two with the group being shipped to Carver’s homestead of militants masquerading as civil engineers. The underlying themes of trust and innocence lost seen throughout the season step into the light at the end of In Harm’s Way, warts and all. Mechanically this episode was spot on, with a collection of tense mini-games where I genuinely felt like my reactions could mess things up. Clementine’s...

The Wolf Among Us Episode 3: A Crooked Mile

Smoke and Mirrors left off with both an appropriately tense cliffhanger and startling revelation. A Crooked Mile picks off right where we left off with Bigby at the seedy, blood-spattered brothel/hotel room now moonlighting as a crime scene. With a likely candidate for the prime murder suspect being deciphered through the discovery of some unsavory photographs, what follows is perhaps the most focused episode of Wolf Among Us yet.

The Walking Dead Season 2: A House Divided

I thought I’d never return to that emotional, bittersweet place the first season of the Walking Dead took me to. I was certain that space in my gamer heart was to remain exclusively reserved for the journey I took as Lee Everett. As Clementine, Telltale has deftly proven their ability to tug on our heart-strings once again with A House Divided.

The Walking Dead Season 2: All that Remains

Telltale created an amazing piece of storytelling with their episodic Walking Dead series. Similar to Rick Grimes of  the comic and television series, we were forced to make tough decisions as Lee Everett; de facto leader/mediator of a survivor group trying to make it through the zombie apocalypse. There was rarely a ‘right’ choice to be found and every decision held dire consequences within the group. It made for a superb experience, keeping hordes of...

The Wolf Among Us: Episode 2 - Smoke and Mirrors

The Wolf Among Us: Episode 2 – Smoke and Mirrors

The first episode of The Wolf Among Us was a well crafted affair with intrigue, deception and a steady build-up that left off on a razor-sharp cliffhanger. Smoke and Mirrors slows things down while attempting to deliver a second helping of the set-pieces that made Faith such a great experience.  Much like a delicious meal reheated the day after, the result is a lukewarm reprise that is filling but predictable. It’s understandable that a follow...

XCOM: Enemy Within

X-COM: Enemy Within Review

X-COM: Enemy Unknown was a game you could literally lose yourself in for 8 hours, realize it’s 4AM, then turn back to the screen and mutter to yourself “Just one more mission”. The depth and replay value of the original were so staggering that it put fear in my heart when I heard Firaxis was releasing not a one-off DLC, but a full-blown expansion of the undisputed strategy king of 2012. How many more hours...

Outlast Review

Before I begin, I’d like to point out that I don’t do well with survival horror games. It’s not that I dislike playing them it’s just that I’m an easy mark for jump scares, psychopaths gnawing on my ankles, that sort of thing. So when I sat down to play my review copy of Outlast I made sure to turn the lights off, the volume up and had my girlfriend–a veteran of all things horror...

The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 – Faith

The Wolf Among Us drops you into the world of Bill Willingham’s acclaimed Fables series as Bigby Wolf, the Sheriff of Fabletown. Despite being in dire need of a shave and having something of a wild streak in him, Bigby isn’t a bad guy. Of course solving crimes within a secret society of fairy tale characters you once terrorized as the Big Bad Wolf could turn anyone to the bottle, or a raging beast.

Cognition Episode 4: The Cain Killer

Cognition has continued to capitalize on it’s strong suits of beautiful art, haunting atmosphere and a gripping story. But it always managed to falter in equal part with ham-fisted game mechanics, wince-inducing dialogue and a failure to put each episode through its paces when it came to quality assurance testing that left much to be desired.  Cognition’s grim, suspenseful episodic adventure series comes to a somewhat unceremonious conclusion with its final installment: The Cain Killer.

Cognition Episode 3: The Oracle

Phoenix Online has been through some rocky beginnings with their Cognition series. The first episode saw a story that limped along, affixed to sub-par game mechanics and the exhausted setting of police crime investigation. While the mixture of supernatural twists and inspired art helped to deliver a moody atmosphere, the pacing dragged and the characters fell flat. Episode two managed to take great leaps and bounds in addressing these issues, concluding with a revelation that offered a glimmer of hope for the property’s future. Their latest entry has made magnificent...
