One of the most impressive packs thus far is 12 Angry Test by CaretCaret. This high quality series of test rooms demonstrate a Valve level quality, brilliant puzzles and a few surprises to keep you on your toes. This pack caters to old Portal 1 fans who said Portal 2′s single player puzzles were too easy and answers with some clever head scratchers that make great use of the many tools and gels introduced in Portal 2. 12 Angry Test can be downloaded through Steam Workshop for Portal 2 and is avaliable now.

Primal Carnage Unleashes New Video

Imagine if there was another sequel to Dino Crisis, you know that game where you were a bad ass chick fighting dinosaurs. Yeah, that was a great game. Ah, memories. Now where was I? Oh, Primal Carnage! Above is a gameplay video that highlights some of the cool things you would be able to do as either a part of the human or dinosaur class. Part Dino Crisis and part “Beast Mode” from Gears of War 3 but overall looking extremely intriguing. If you had the chance to play this at Pax East, what did you think?

Move over MLG, a New Competitor has Entered the Arena: Virgin Gaming

A few weeks ago, Virgin Gaming hosted a gaming tournament with over one milliion dollars given away. Close to 900 participants and over 2000 spectators! Check out the video below for a quick recap of the spectacular event.

Dragon’s Dogma reveals new Ur-Dragon event mode

“

Legend tells of an immensely powerful dragon that appears in the Everfall beneath Gran Soren. Known as the Ur-Dragon, this is the challenge that awaits Dragon’s Dogma owners. Players and their parties of Pawns from around the world can compete collectively online in an asynchronous encounter against the Ur-Dragon via Xbox LIVE or PlayStation Network. The effect of each party’s attacks will be combined, but be warned its immense strength means it will take multiple encounters before the Ur-Dragon finally falls. Be the one that deals the fatal blow and receive the maximum reward, but regardless all players can still obtain both common and rare items dropped by the Ur-Dragon when they inflict damage.

Players without an online connection can also take on the Ur-Dragon alone, but the rewards will be different to those received online. All slayers of the Ur-Dragon will have their names and play times recorded in a hall of fame for others to view and aim to beat.

The Ur-Dragon challenge is available when Dragon’s Dogma releases in North America on May 22 and across Europe on May 25.

Announcing the launch of Rockstar Games Crews

So first of all, I’m totally against EVERY SINGLE FUCKING GAME feeling OBLIGATED to add a multiplayer element to it. Max Payne 3 isn’t any different. Now you can play another online shooter with your friends. Yay? And on top of that you and your friends can create crews just like how MMOs have guilds. For more details on how to create your crew and the benefits of being in one, visit Rockstar Games for all the details.

Gaikai Makes Aims at Reaching Millions of Gamers Through Facebook

I have come to realize that many people don’t really read my posts. When I went to CES 2102 I fell in LOVE with Gaikai. So, again I will bring your attention to that article because this is what I feel is making most console makers nervous.

First, take a look Gaikai’s David Perry chat about the future of gaming and Facebook. In this video he talks about a future that consoles should be truly afraid of: a world where physical consoles aren’t necessary. Now gamers are able to demo many of today’s popular games through their browser without the need of a console. It’s truly a beautiful thing, folks!

You play as a quiet 12 year old boy visiting your Uncle Professor Fitz Quadwrangle, you are tasked to save your Uncle from his latest experiment gone bad using his last invention, the Interdimensional Shift Device. This glove when, powered properly, gives the player the ability to bend reality and change the properties of the world around you.
Remembering ADAM YAUCH, 1964-2012

Written By jrobertson

You could make the case that Adam Yauch, also known as MCA, who died today, was the most important Beastie Boy. The other two–Ad Rock and Mike D–in the three-card-monty lyrical shuffle, you could be forgiven for confusing them. But there was never any doubt about which one was MCA. While the other two were clearly educated white boys trying to rap, Yauch was gifted with a gravelly soulfulness they simply didn’t have and never would. Yauch had a danger about him in the early days: The other two guys looked like jokers, city kids having hipster-ironic fun before we called it that, but MCA invoked the classic street hood. There was nothing ironic about his leather jacket and scraggly beard – the irony (different kind) came later, when the seeming Beastie-est of the Beastie Boys turned out Buddhist.

Mix the Bass Ale with the Guinness Stout, and pour some out… for Yauch.

While at PAX East, I got some face time with the very charming and creative, Kim Swift of Air Tight Games where we talked about the upcoming title: Quantum Conundrum. Kim is famous for her work on Left 4 Dead as well as being the Co-creator of Portal.

Lawrence Young: Well,
Kim Swift: Well? oh!
Lawrence: Hahaha
Kim: Hi, I’m Kim Swift, I am the Creative Director for Quantum Conundrum
Lawrence: Ok, that works!
[we both laugh]
Kim: I don’t know [chuckles]
Lawrence: Ok, so what inspired the game [Quantum Conundrum]?
Kim: I mean, there was no general inspiration. I kinda had the idea one day, pitched it to my team at Air Tight and we had a couple of other pitches we were thinking over, we voted and that was the one that came on top. It wasn’t very interesting
Lawrence: I don’t know? When I first saw it, I’m sure you have played Garry’s Mod…
Kim: mhm
Lawrence: It kinda reminded me of the physics mod, I know it wasn’t part of the full game, so I didn’t know if you ever messed around with that or not.
Kim: I’ve played around with Garry’s mod but I didn’t get to physics mod stuff.
Lawrence: It was just a thought, any rate… So you do a lot of puzzle type games, but they are different types of puzzle games
Kim: By a lot there is two, and the other two were zombie games
Lawrence: There was Narbacular Drop, right?
Kim: Narbacular Drop? I don’t know if you could count student projects.
Lawrence: [shrug] I played it
Kim: But yeah, you know, I like puzzle games. I want to play them, and they are fun and they are super fun to make. So I want to make more of them.
Lawrence: With Portal and Quantum Conundrum, there is a little more of an action focus which is real interesting.
Kim: It goes back and forth. There is definitely action elements. There is that dichotomy between having players pause for a second and really poking through something and being more cerebral and then going back and forth to a more action oriented platforming game. It makes for a good pacing, you bring the heart rate up the dial it down a little to think.
Lawrence: What goes into making the puzzles initially?
Kim: Well, first its components, So in our case we have the dimensions being different tools. Then we have gameplay elements as well that depending on what dimensions you’re in, react in different ways. Once you have your initial base set of stuff you are working with, going in and being like, “OK well, I don’t have a puzzle yet that uses reverse gravity and fluffy dimensions, let’s come up with one” and see what gameplay objects that work best with it. Then kinda piece it together, and all while also going through the process of teaching the player and what dimensions are and what gameplay objects are and reinforce that as well. It is actually from a high level fairly…
Lawrence: Compelling behavior
Kim: yeah
Lawrence: Gravity goes up and you can make things go further, now do it again without being told.
Kim: yep
Lawrence: So what other types of games are you looking at diving into? You mentioned you made a couple of zombie games as well.
Kim: I worked on Left 4 Dead 1 and 2
Lawrence: I didn’t realize you worked on those too.
Kim: Yeah I did, I was a designer and environment artist.
Lawrence: oh, I liked the environment art in that game.
Kim: As far as different genres, I haven’t really thought about it. We are just got through the game, so I am kinda waiting for now. I kinda want to take a breath, simmer down, go on vacation.
Lawrence: That sounds like a good idea, I did notice… humor, did you do the writing on that?
Kim: Yep, I was the main writer for our game, i wrote over 800 lines for this title, It’s hard work, people are like “Oh writing a game is easy” no… it is not easy
Lawrence: So wait a minute, you have done enviroment art, In what way do you do the environment art?
Kim: You know, dressing up levels, texture art, lighting, pretty much the only thing I haven’t done is animation
Lawrence: You don’t really hear that often
Kim: I have ADD
Lawrence: You usually hear people like “I am a texture artist, I make textures I bring my camera and I snap pictures, make them seamless and put them in the game with a normal map”
Kim: I think especially when I have a creative director leadership role for the game, I feel it is my duty to know as much of how to make a game as possible because it will help you make the best decisions and help you balance out the team. When you are in charge you owe that to your team
Lawrence: You just don’t hear about a lot of jack of all trades in this industry. It like I’m a writer, I’m an animator, I’m a 3D modeler.
Kim: To be fair, I just love video games so the more aspects that I can learn about how to make a better video game… It’s great
Lawrence: To that last point, I hate rigging for animation
Kim: I have never really tried it, I’ve done a little bit of it but not anything… It is just something i really want to learn. I know how to model a little bit
Lawrence: What do you use for modeling, maya, max?
Kim: Maya
Lawrence: I am a Max guy myself
Kim: The company standard to use Maya
Lawrence: Is there anything that you what to… yes
[Interruption, I think it had something to do with a sandwich.. its all kinda muffled and drowned out by laughing]
PR guy: could you oh
Kim: yeah
[laughing]
Lawrence: I’m just going to be transcribe this, so it’s cool
Kim: no worries
Lawrence: I’m going to transcribe that part too
Kim: And use it? [laughing]
Lawrence: Oh you better believe it, people are going to be like “Why am I reading this?”
Lawrence: Is there anything you want to talk about the game, yourself?
Kim: Lets see, Oh! if you do buy the game.
Lawrence: I will…
Kim: When you go to the menu screen, If you notice on the top right hand corner of the menu there will be a button that says “Do a Thing.” Now, it won’t unlock for you right away, but I would compel to you figure out how to unlock that button.. because Do a Thing is awesome!
Lawrence: Do a Thing?
Kim: Do a Thing. So that’s all I’m going to say, leave a little mystery
Lawrence: I like that
Kim: Track that sucker down
Lawrence: Do a Thing.. ok
Kim: Yup
Lawrence: Well, I look forward to the game, Summertime I imagine,
Kim: Yeah, It will be on XBLA, PSN and Steam, downloadable title, on Summer 2012
Lawrence: About how long is it?
Kim: The game last 6 to 12 hours depending on your prowess, we have seen people run through it in like six and most people are in around 10 hours.
Lawrence: I’m sure when it comes out there will be some guy who will say “I’m going to power through this guy in 45 min”
Kim: There are always a Speed runners, we already have some pretty ridiculous speed runs internally
Lawrence: So, it sound of it about the same length as portal 1. why not a full release
Kim: Portal 1 was only in the 4 to 6 hours, this is a much bigger game.
Lawrence: That kinda only furthers my question, why not a full release
Kim: I don’t know, Downloadable is where it is at. From a developer standpoint it’s less risk and money. So to get a box title on a shelf requires a ridiculous amount of money.
Lawrence: Marketing
Kim: Yea
Lawrence: Printing
Kim: Yea, to be able to make up the money that is invested initially in the title, is hard
Lawrence: So it’s safe to say you are probably going to stick with downloadable then
Kim: Who knows what the future holds, but for this game it was the right way to go we are testing something new to see if people dig it and it’s the easiest way to get it to our audience
Lawrence: I can definitely see that, It was good talking to you.
Kim: Yeah, not a problem

as we prepare for the week ahead.

This Week we run through:

Quick Hits – Featuring Quantum Conundrum Hijinks, Extra Credit discusses gaming harassment, and Adam Sessler leaves G4

In case you missed ‘em… – Run through on the latest from the staff at Royal Flush Magazine

Let’s get started!

QUICK HITS — THE MOST NOTABLE NEWS OF THE WEEK!

QUANTUM CONUNDRUM HIJINKS!
The folks at iam8bit and Square Enix are teaming up for a top secret event in the Los Angeles area!

[iam8bit has] teamed up with [their] pals at Square Enix to create a rather crazy experiment…and need your help!

It’s all in conjunction with this summer’s release of Quantum Conundrum, a new puzzle game from super-creative designer and co-creator of PORTAL™, Kim Swift, and developer Airtight Games.

While [iam8bit] can’t give away too many details, if you’re chosen to participate (as only 50 lucky people will be), it’s quite possible you’ll be transported to another dimension, all in the name of science. Seriously, we’re not messing around. And that’s all we can say!

All the non-secret details can be found here: http://www.iam8bit.com/quantumconundrum/.

STREET FIGHTER 25TH ANNIVERSARY TRIBUTE – FAN ART DEADLINE
Looking to celebrate the upcoming 25th Anniversary for Street Fighter? I can’t think of a better way than to sketch, paint, or create a sculpture to submit to celebrate over 25 years of Street Fighter! The deadline is quickly coming up!

Adam Sessler bids adieu to G4
To the shock of many this week, the long time staple in the world of gaming, Adam Sessler issues a statement which confirms to all that he was indeed leaving G4 and hosted his very last episode of X-Play last week. We all wish him the best! G4′s loss.

Extra Credits – Harassment
This week the folks at Extra Credits, tackled “the rampant bullying, misogyny and hate speech that occurs within the gaming community.” However, everyone thought it was the right time to clutter the internet with more articles on the Cross Assault incident. It’s time that people see past that and see that it’s not just a FGC issue. But this week’s episode is still worth watching.

Just a quick recap on what the latest from RoyalFlushMagazine.com

ZUMA’S REVENGE (DS) – RETURN OF THE CASUAL GAME
Zuma’s Revenge (Popcap Games) is the sequel to the original game, Zuma. In it, you must survive a newly evolved world of Zuma that is ruled by evil tiki bosses. You play as a frog spitting colored balls to knock out paired matches of balls travelling along a predetermined path toward a skull. The balls which are travelling along the path consist of both the colored ones and special power up ones entered randomly and according to the game mode. If the balls create a consecutive match of at least three, the segment disappears. The object is to keep performing this action until a meter is filled, causing the train of balls to stop. From here, simply clear out the remaining balls to finish the level and move on to the next. Its repetitive in its simplicity, but that’s to be expected in a casual game.

I can’t speak for everyone here at Royal Flush, but I like Walking Dead; the zombie violence, human drama… unlike most zombie works, the world of Walking Dead feels like it could really happen. I also enjoy Tell Tale and Adventure games, I case you didn’t notice from my favorable reviews of Sam and Max from literally forever ago.

The Walking Dead the game is a new story in the comic universe and will be broken up into five Episodes starting today and rolled out over each next month or so.

Check out the story trailer below, and screenshot on the full page.

The DS version boasts five game modes including the all-new, DS-exclusive, Daily Dungeon and Versus modes. Daily Dungeon is a daily mix up of game modes that change every day via a slot machine that allows you to play a randomly generated game from three categories. The Versus mode is a simple game played against another player using three game types but your opponent needs to have his own game cartridge.

.

Adventure mode is like the “Story” mode of the game as it explains how the frog ended up on the island with the malcontent Tiki bosses, and the consequences of his actions for the next 60 levels. In almost every level, the frog is stationary to one corner, but there are a few where he is actually able to alternate spots, and in some levels you are given a track to slide along. That comes in handy with some of the more tricky boss stages.

Completing Adventure mode opens up more levels in the challenge mode and unlocks the Iron Frog mode as well. Iron Frog is similar to the survival mode of the previous entry in which you are given one frog and 10 levels to complete as you try to score as many points as possible.

The DS version of Zuma’s Revenge works very well with the touch screen, and is very responsive. The only thing that lacks in this game comes from the overall appearance of the game. At times it can appear very grainy, and dull. However, this does not deter from the fact that it is a fun game for a quick pick up & play puzzle game.

Zuma’s Revenge is a Nintendo DS game and can be played on the Nintendo 3DS, but does not have 3D features.

Crysis 3 was announced but it’s not coming out till 2013, folks…

… Powered by Crytek’s proprietary CryENGINE®, Crysis 3 advances the state of the art with unparalleled visuals and dynamic shooter gameplay. Players take on the role of ‘Prophet’ as he returns to New York, only to discover that the city has been encased in a Nanodome created by the corrupt Cell Corporation. The New York City Liberty Dome is a veritable urban rainforest teeming with overgrown trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers. Within the Liberty Dome, seven distinct and treacherous environments become known as the Seven Wonders. This dangerous new world demands advanced weapons and tactics.
