The device is compatible with Android devices running Android 2.1.1 Éclair or later, Apple iPads running iOS 3.2 or later and iPhones supporting iOS 4.0 or later. Once the device is paired with a phone or tablet, it automatically connects once powered on. It has the traditional Super Nintendo 6-button gamepad layout (D-pad with 6 front facing buttons, 2 of them being your start and select, and two additional trigger buttons). It is compact, supports a 9 hr battery life, and charges via a standard micro USB port on the bottom of the pad.

Now all of that is well and good… now for the eye-grabber… The controller itself sports a strong spring-loaded grip that can grasp seemingly any phone. Another convention-goer put the clamp to the test with his galaxy nexus which was surrounded by a rubber brick of a case. The phone wedged right in and stayed in place. Now all that talk about using your smart phones as hand-held gaming peripherals will now hold true with your hardcore gamers. Remember, the device is connected via bluetooth, so if you do not necessarily need the phone in the grip in case the unit feels top-heavy. But where’s the fun in that?

Right now the controller is currently being sold in the UK for about £49.99 via Amazon. Until Fructel makes their move to the US, you can always venture into overseas purchasing on Amazon UK. I’ll definitely be looking out for it.

In July 2009, Valve head and all around awesome guy Gabe Newell said the following:

“What I think would be much better would be if the community could finance the games. In other words, ‘Hey, I really like this idea you have. I’ll be an early investor in that and, as a result, at a later point I may make a return on that product, but I’ll also get a copy of that game.’”

Incredibly, as if Valve was foreshadowing something big to come, Minecraft had already began development at that time and was allowing people to do this very thing starting a month earlier. Over the next few years, the public could not only watched this game grow and develop in ways few could expect, they could take part in it’s very creation and what it has become today is a direct result of the contributions of it’s fans. Is this a great game or a failed experiment?

Minecraft… is a sandbox game.
No, it’s not like Skyrim or Grand Theft Auto, it’s a sandbox in the same way a real sandbox actually is. It’s a game without objectives, where you make your own fun and do whatever you want.

When you start a game, you choose a game mode and given a randomly created block world, your new world is infinite in every direction and can have everything from rolling hills, to towering snow covered mountains, hidden dungeons and vast deep oceans. At it’s most basic level, you can remove and place block like legos, and create new blocks and tools through the games crafting system. At night during the survial mode, exploding creepers, zombies and spiders come out that can kill you, so you have to take shelter to protect yourself through the night.

It may sound simple, but as you wrap your head around the powerful tools, your fortifications will take shape and become your own. You’ll also need to eat which means creating a farm and ranching animals, you need to find iron and other new resources to create new items, and before you know it, you have a whole complex or town that is unique to you. It can be easy to drain hours tending, defending and tweaking your space, but the game shines best when you decide to adventure into the world beyond your walls with your newly made weapons and armor (Don’t forget, this world is literally infinite in size). You can create a portal to another world call the nether, a dangerous world with its own wealth of discovery and fortifications, in the normal world there are abandoned mines and dungeons, there is even another mysterious world beyond that you can discover after collecting items from the game’s most deadly creatures and uncovering its deepest secrets. The game even offers an online mode so that you can build and explore with your friends and share your creations.

Even after playing the game for so long, I still occasionally encounter experiences similar to my first time playing.
Recently, I used the nether as a sort slingshot by building a new portal in the nether a distance away from the one I arrived in, this teleported me into an abandoned mine filled with gold, diamonds and monsters. I’m an experienced player who as been playing since summer 2010 so I came prepared expecting the unknown. I gathered as much as I could carry, fought the monster backs and in my careless wandering, found myself incredibly lost. I set to dig my way out, being very careful not to have gravel or sand collapse on me so I can survive with my prizes. Then as I climb, suddenly sand and water poured through my ceiling. I swam up and out not knowing where I even was at, and nearly drowned, but made it. At the surface, I found myself just off the coast of an unexplored island. I swam to shore and quickly try to find a high peak to see if I could visually find my way back. I scaled a near by mountain but I could see no sign of my or anyone else’s settlement (I was playing online for all this). Worse still, the night was starting to fall and it wouldn’t be wise to wander the night and risk dying and losing everything I have worked for at this point. I quickly cut down a near by tree and threw together a quick shelter out of cobblestone, just before night fell, with that I was able to make a workbench and furnace safely where I took some of the iron ore and redstone I found in the mines to make a compass pointing to my home (compasses in this game are set to the last place you slept) and waited for night to pass. Once daybreak arrived, I take off running in the direction the compass, eventually leading me to a vast ocean. I then whipped up a boat with the last of my wood and took sail (sort of, there are no sails on the boat). As I continued following my compass on this vast ocean, night was starting to fall again and just as it was about to get dark, I see a tower… It was one of my friend’s building, I had made it!
I didn’t need the compass anymore, I knew exactly where I was now and was able to make it to my village with all my treasures. The best thing about all of this was that it was completely unscripted, the stakes were real, and I overcame the challenge. Experiences like that are rewarding in a way that I have never seen in any other game, it’s kinda hard to explain really. The best part of that adventure, I was able to take all of those resources and make an automated mine cart system that connected my village with my friends’ right through the desert.

So is Minecraft a great game? Yes.
It also stands as one of gaming’s greatest achievements, as a grassroots game that challenges how games can be produced, proves that someone can make a website with a game and a buy it now button without the help of a publisher and inspires the imagination in ways no modern big budget console games can ever do.

Simply put, Minecraft is the first steps towards proving that gaming can be something special beyond the scope of what movies, music and book can ever be, both creatively and commercially.

NOTE: This review reflects the PC version of the game, the XBLA was not available during the time of review, should there be any major differences once it is release, the review will be revisited. Until then, consider this our comprehensive review.

One of the most anticipated and talked about games for 2011 is no doubt Battlefield 3. The beta goes live for the world on September 29th, but for cool people like myself, as well as people who bought last year’s Medal of Honor, who may themselves also be cool people, get to dive into the game early. For the rest of the world, this preview of the beta will have to do.

The beta build features the Operation Metro Rush map where players are tasked to attack/defend 2 advancing points through a city park, underground subway and into the city streets to the target objective. Like the Bad Company games, the attackers in rush mode have limited respawn tickets that resets when two objectives have been taken, and the defenders have infinite respawn tickets that requires them to outlast their attackers and prevent them from taking a point and advancing. Many people will no doubt be disappointment to learn that the beta does not include a deathmatch, hardcore mode or any vehicles to drive, so those who were hoping to fly a fighter jet in multiplayer will have to wait a bit longer.

Like many other betas, this game does suffer from some bugs and issues (which is kinda part of the beta experience). The most common issues I found on the Xbox 360 version are some clipping issues when in the prone position, strange lighting quirks outdoors, and some unstable connections that cause your character to backpedal and have trouble jumping over cover and hurdles. They don’t really hurt the game’s overall feel, but they’re there and it can be frustrating when they manifest and cost you a kill. It’s a good thing then that your stats in the beta will not carry over to the final game.

Another thing returning from the Bad Company games is environmental damage, both cosmetic and dramatic. This damage system works in the games favor on a number of levels, It creates satisfying feedback when you fire your weapons, create a the opportunity for strategic destruction, and generates a sense of mayhem and chaos on the battlefield that changes the face of the level as the game progresses. This mechanic is unmatched by rival games like Call of Duty and is the most obvious feature in the beta that sets this game apart from the rest.

So the big question will no doubt be, “Does this beta tell me why I should or shouldn’t choose Battlefield 3 over Call of Duty MW3?” and for those people, I really don’t have an answer. This is very clearly an unfinished game, and a public beta like this usually represents the most stable build of the game, never the latest or most recent, this can mean that you could be playing a version of the Battlefield 3 that can be as much as 2 or 3 months old. Try the game for yourself and decide, it’s a lot of fun regardless. The Battlefield 3 beta goes live to the public September 29th and ends October 10th.

Today we have an interview with the man, they myth, the legend Mr. J! No, not Mr. J from Americas Next Top Model, but the other Mr. J. Yeah, that’s right…the author of “Amphigory Almanac: Hebetudinous Humour, Pedantic Prose, & Linguistic Levit: Meet Mr. J”. I simply call it Meet Mr. J, its easier to remember and a hell of a lot easier to say. Let the fun begin, shall we?

Who is Mr. J? I mean, does the J stand for something or do you prefer to remain anonymous? I understand if you don’t want your celebrity status to interrupt your daily going-ons.

-Mr.J is either the fake author of a real book or the real author of a fake book.

-Broken down it’s: Three syllable sounds, two lowercase letters, and one witty writer.

-It’s an acronym of “Mostly Ridiculous Jokes”.

-I don’t need a pseudonym to keep me from being a famous face in the writer world, my lack of talent as an author has that covered. I’m so unrecognizable that even my driver’s license photo is just a picture of a superimposed question mark stamped over a faceless silhouette.

Upon reading your book, the only conclusions I can draw are that you are either schizophrenic, or have an identity complex. Which of these terms can you relate to more?

-I don’t have schizophrenia, one of my alter personalities does.

-I have multiple personalities, unfortunately, they’re all boring, dull, or both so it’s hard to chose which to be which has lead to my identity complex. I’m not sure which real me to pretend to be or which fake me I really am.

-It all started when my identity was stolen then the thief realized who I was and returned it immediately along with several others to chose from. Since then, to me, books on ‘self help’ seem identical to books on ‘helping others’.

The book took me twice as long to read than it normally would of, I had to look every third word up in a dictionary. Do you consider yourself to be a wordsmith, and do you talk like this in normal conversation?

-The word choice can be confusing like a colour blind kid trying to solve the Rubik’s Cube, like Stevie Wonder trying to parallel park, or like an Amish elder trying to get a job at Radio Shack.

-Unfortunately I do talk like this: And people just stare at me like I’m a lava lamp, like I owe them money, or like I’m a French Menu.

-I find too many polysyllabic words in a row is boring and causes people to zone out, even my tape recorder gets to a point where it just pretends to listen. Every time: I press record and it yawns. I press rewind and it tries to remember what the last big word I said was. And then finally when I press play, it pretends to run out of batteries.

Would you consider yourself to be an intelligent man? Do you feel you’re smarter than the general public and this is why you have to use such a profound vocabulary?

-Joking aside (which is to the left side of my superior intelligence and to the right side of the general public shame of their own stupidity/envy of someone else’s intelligence and by ‘someone else’ I mean ‘me’, for all you dumb dumbs out there…but joking aside) I don’t think laughter and learning should be segregated like church and state. And amalgamating vaudeville and vernacular acts as the midwife that births brilliantly infested excerpts of ebullient, erudite, & esoteric entertainment.Am I taller all of a sudden? Nope it’s this soap box underneath my feet, sorry to pompously pretentiously and pedantic parade precipitous pontifications in homage of Hamlet’s hebetudinously humorous Pollonius that took longer to get to the point than the earlobes of Spock.

-So yeah, I used to be a narcissistic, megalomaniac, snobbish word-nerd that has been arrogantly self absorbed since I was born, even before that. For example: My sonogram looked like twins but was an illusion because it was a picture of me looking at the genius trapped in my handheld window which the dumber general public still argue was my own reflection in my handheld mirror, either way I’m a winner, an only child and a winner or a twin separated at birth from my identical brother who I assume looks like a winner.

-And according to the dumber general public or the public that’s dumber in general, I’m still self involved these days. Example: Recently I failed Astronomy 101 even though I’m smarter than the general public simply due to the small fact that I thought the world literally revolved around me and my brilliance.

Upon completion of your book, would I be right to assume you got beat up a lot in school? Don’t be bashful, I’ll keep this between us…

-Well, I had home school…So yes. But since I’m an alumnus of Mr.J Academy, I won’t see any of my classmates till my 10 year reunion…aka: Next decade when I look into the mirror and remember how snow days were never canceled and for some reason still held a brief roll call of attendance for the entire student body that consisted of one student, one body, and less than one which if my math is right would be roughly zero or so, when it comes to counting the entire student body’s accumulated total of absences: Since staying home sick meant going to school sick.

There are at least 1.2 million different characters in your stories, are they based on real people or do you make most of them up? Do you take real life experiences and turn them into short stories?

- I can’t say really. I’m not sure if it’s life imitating art imitating or if it’s art imitating life, but I can say that regardless, either way, I’m sure they’re both imitating an sh*tty book…and an imitation of an imitation is an original, sh*tty, but original.

Do you write short stories because you have ADD and can’t focus on one thing for too long? Don’t feel bad, I enjoyed reading all of the stories, and feel if it was just one story I would of been bored out of my mind anyways.

-Yes, I have A.D…Hey what’s that?

-My book is so ADD that the book mark is a set of shiny keys.

-And yeah if it was one long story it would be so exuberantly excruciating for the reader that it should come with a tub & toaster, chair & rope, or razor & note.

I found your book to become somewhat addicting, as much as I wanted to putit down…and trust me I really wanted to put it down I just couldn’t do it. I wanted to get to the next story, and the next story, and so on. Did you expect this type of reaction or am I the only one to have this reaction?

-You’re the only one who’s read it so I’m not sure. I still haven’t read it. It was hard enough to write a novel, to read one too would be too much.

-I assume readers would want to get to the next story in hopes of it being better than the one they’re currently reading, which of course it isn’t. I’m thinking to changing the title to “Screw me out of 12 bucks”.

-People often think I was on drugs writing it, so it makes sense that it’s addicting. I’ve heard (cuz like I said, still haven’t read it myself, but I’ve heard from others who have pretended to read it) that it’s so addicting that rehab clinics have now replaced methadone with abridged audio versions of my book narrated by Dr.Drew Pinksy.

It seems like your book tour will never end, when it finally does come to a conclusion, what is next on your horizon?

-Write an apology letter to everyone who read my book. I’ll be saying the phrase, “I’m sorry” more than Alec Trebek during a game of Celeb Jeopardy featuring Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, and Glenn Beck. So lemme start that long list now: “Sorry” to EACH, EVERY & ALL…two of you. I assume I have at least two readers all together, yeah probably two (that is-if I round up by three).

Before this is immortalized on RoyalFlushMagazine.Com, you have anything to say? You better speak now or forever hold your peace!

-Yes, subsequently in closing I leave you with 3 things:

1…Buy my book, “Meet Mr.J” written by Mr.J because all precedes go to charity.

2…Since you bought my book, I should be honest and tell ya that yes precedes went to charity but also forgot to mention that I just changed my name from Mr.J to “Charity” and I think it’s ironic that no one gave me my name “Charity”.

3…Finally, now that you’ve bought my book for a “Charity” that just changed it’s name back to “Mr.J”, I’d like to be humble, modest, and meek when I say: You’re welcome!

You can pick up Mr. J’s book “Meet Mr. J” at Amazon.Com and you really should. Do you want this guy driving your cab, flipping your burgers, or even mowing your lawn? I didn’t think so. Go buy the book, alright?

So yeah, how many people plan on going to some kinda of Halloween type festivity this weekend? Not me, that requires too much of the “doing things,” something I’m generally opposed too. If you are like me and too lazy to actually do something outside, here is some great games you can be playing while passing out candy to kids dressed as Edward of Twilight, Justin Bieber, and various other throw away pop culture icons I won’t claim to understand.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION UNDEAD NIGHTMARE: Ever feel like the only thing the wild west was missing was a completely crazy undead outbreak? Me neither, but now you got it anyway for the low price of 800 ms points/10.00 USD. This expansion for the GOTY contender features a new single player campaign, Undead Overrun (RDR’s Coop Zombie Survival Mode), the king of the hill style “Land Grab,” new weapons like the insane Blunderbuss, and unlockable outfits both campaign and multiplayer, this pack is a huge value for 10 dollars. Red Dead fans should jump on board the zombie killing if you haven’t already.

COSTUME QUEST: From the mind of Tim Schafer and the folks at Double Fine comes Costume Quest, an old school RPG about candy, fighting ghost and ghouls, and turning into giant robots. If you are scratching your head in confusion, you obviously have never a Tim Schafer game and should also be ashamed of yourself. This game is a true classic RPG ,basically think Earthbound: Halloween edition, complete with super cute big headed kids, great humor and lots of over the top cartoon violence. If you love old school RPG’s you should really kick Double Fine the 1600ms points/15.00 USD for PSN and XBLA .

SECOND ANNU-HELL TEAM FORTRESS 2 HALLOWEEN SPECIAL: The Halloween action is back in Team Fortress 2 on PC with some new maps and stuff. Halloween Harvest is back with all the exploding pumpkins and ghost, but we also get Mann-Manor. This new map will reward it’s players sometimes with a surprise Halloween gift and scare them with the first ever, NPC monster “The Horseless Headless Horse-Mann” who will charge and decapitate all the players regardless of team. The update also includes the new Art Pass contest winners’ map and new items in Mann Co. Store, all for the low price of FREE.

LEFT 4 DEAD: THE SACRIFICE: Need more zombies and Valve love in your Halloween, then its time for some Left 4 Dead lovin. The old campaigns are always worth a play and the new Sacrifice campaign is here to deliver something fresh. Left 4 Dead 2 owners can also play through No Mercy with all the Left 4 Dead 2 features and trimmings, all for the super low 540 ms point and the even lower FREE on PC.

SAM & MAX: NIGHT OF THE RAVING DEAD: It’s no secret that that I’m a Sam & Max fan, and until Nov 1 you can download episode 203 completely FREE. In this spooky adventure, follow Sam and Max as they stop the a Zombie outbreak that has taken hold of New York. Face the zombie horde’s Eurotrash leader, Jurgen and build a monster in an exciting point and click adventure. Like I said, its FREE, so give it a try.

It can be hard to believe that the original Guitar Hero just came out only 5 years ago. In that time, we’ve seen music games flourish, evolve, oversaturate the market and then get pushed aside for the next big cash-in for publishers (Modern War Shooters.) Harmonix, the driving force for music games, has gone through quite a bit of change themselves in these short 5 years. The success of Guitar Hero and Rock Band has brought the company from obscure indie developer to one of the most revered developers in the games industry. Now their back on tour with their next big title, Rock Band 3.

Since its release in 2007, Rock band 2 has been a part of my regular games rotation and is always a blast to pull out at a party. I love the game so much, that in the 3 years I have been playing it, I have worn out 2 copies of the game 3 guitars, 2 drum sets, and a microphone that got smashed into a coffee table when I got just a little to into a song. I have a lot of great memories like the death of that microphone, and many others thanks to that game. While I had my fun with Rock Band 2, I can happily retire my disk for the new Rock Band 3 with no concern at all.

This game features a brilliant 83 songs everyone who ever liked rock will love, the inclusion of the keyboard and pro mode, Full support for the already existing 2000+ songs available via DLC and past games, and a streamline interface that makes it super easy to access all this new content. This may all sound like a bunch of simple bullet points on the back of the box, and it is, but I can tell you that it all really works.

When you start the game, you are instantly treated to the games self described “Overshell,” an ever present menu on the bottom of the screen that allows you to tweak all the little personal details a player may want to mess with, without the need to interrupt the game flow for yourself or everyone else. Want to skip the next song so you can grab a drink? Simply drop out without ever forcing the rest of the party back to the main menu and jump back in once you are ready. Everything from switching characters, instruments, lefty flip, you can even migrate your gamer tag to another instrument without logging out and resigning back in, its all handed from the overshell, and it works great.

The game also features some new and tweaked gameplay modes. Party shuffle mode (just like Guitar Hero 5) is where player can drop in or out during a song or just let the game play music on its own for as long as you let it go, but with the huge set list you can accumulate through DLC and song transfer, the game can really be its own Jute Box. Pro Trainer lets you learn the ropes to for the game’s new Pro instruments, none of which I have because the new hardware isn’t available yet to my dismay. Finally, the new career mode features a suite of tour options and goals that make playing it with friends fun and manageable in a short sitting or the all night play sessions.

Presentation for this game is simply a sight to behold. The game’s graphics have been lifted from the ground up and it all looks and runs great. There is a new character creator that lets you tweak many parts of your characters face and physique, while still keeping to the games art style. And finally there is no more money, so most of the clothes and instruments are unlocked from the start, leaving only the really over the top and crazy looking stuff to be unlocked via goals.

Goals are Rock Band 3′s ways of tracking your progress and skill, think of them as mini achievements (though some of them are achievements.) The menu for them clearly outlines what you have done and what is left you to do and how to go about do it. By Clicking on a goal, you will instantly create a setlist that will allow you the chance to complete those goals, ready to play that instant. All these little tweaks really ties into Rock Band 3′s main design goal, to let you do what you want, with as little button presses, interruptions and time to do it. The interface design of Rock Band 3 is Harmonix’s greatest success and worth the 60 dollars alone. Many games (even outside the genre) could learn a thing or two from successful execution of this new interface .

I really could go on all day about how awesome it is to finally get the Beach Boys in a game, all the little clever touches like how you can watch your characters on the loading screens set up for their gig, being able to sort your songs in every way you could ever want to sort them, the new facebook and community tools, and so on and so forth. But it’s all going to drive home the same point, this is the best music game ever made, hands down. If you ever loved a music game, even a little bit, it’s time to get back on tour, Rock Band 3 is a game not to be missed.

Dolor author Rick Florino is proud to premiere the first three chapters of his latest novel, Dolor: Arielle Book III exclusively here at RFMag.com.

In these first three chapters we plunge deep into the world of Dolor, an Anytown, USA riddled with pulse-pounding events and creepy, strange characters. This quick taste is just enough to introduce us to the very human individuals that find themselves wrapped in the seedy underbelly of the town they call home, Dolor.

Arielle is the follow up to the critically acclaimed and highly successful Chrissy and Lila stories that first introduced us to this wicked world. Both are available FREE for download at bookofdolor.com.

The darkest Dolor yet, Florino’s series has been lauded by Fangoria, The Examiner, Bloody-Disgusting.com, DreadCentral.com and numerous other genre tastemakers as well as Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor, Hollywood Undead and author Mary Forsberg Weiland. If you dig Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Warren Ellis or Chuck Palahniuk you may find yourself right at home with Dolor: Arielle Book III.

Peer into Arielle today and on September 27 download it only bookofdolor.com.

So PAX Prime in Seattle this year is nearly over and we got a bunch of surprises this year from the show.

Duke Nukem Lives Again: After much rumor and speculation, Take 2 finally confirmed that Duke Nukem is alive and well in the hands of far more financially responsible developer, Gearbox! The title was playable on the show floor and is expected to be released in 2011.

Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath goes HD: The cult favorite Xbox adventure game gets a HD coat of paint, strangely as a Playstation Network exclusive, at least at launch. The maybe PSN exclusive remake is set to release around Easter 2011.

Valve Details Portal Coop and promises 3 big announcements for 2011: Portal 2′s standalone Coop game was playable for the first time. The game featured all the mind bending puzzles, clever wit, and frustration, all through the glory of split screen or online play. The coop game even features clever user tools like setting markers and waypoints to prevent people from screaming at eachother and pointing their nasty nacho fingers on your thousand dollar TV, or even worse not having anything to point at all, online. Valve also apparently has 3 other tricks for 2011 outside of Portal 2, Could it be the next chapter of Half Life, the rumored Defense of the Ancients RTS game, or something else, or all 3. Who knows, thats half the fun of course.

Sonic Colors Wii actually looks good?!?! The stuff from Sega’s latest attempt at making a good 3D Sonic game look promising. Gone are this terrible hub world, creepy story, and unnecessary gimmicks like swords and werewolves. What we get is quite possibly the Super Mario Galaxy of Sonic games. I am still being careful not to get over hyped, but keep you’re eyes peeled, this might be the Sonic game we have all been waiting for.
