We move on from one beloved franchise onto another: Tomb Raider®. During a recent Tribeca Games panel, Daniel Chayer-Bisson (Senior Game Director), Jill Murray (Lead Writer), Rich Briggs (Senior Brand Director) and special guest Camilla Luddington (performance artist for Lara Croft), revealed a first look at the upcoming Shadow of the Tomb Raider game. During the panel, we learned that Lara must master a deadly jungle, overcome terrifying tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour all as she races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse. Lara will ultimately be forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is meant to culminate Lara’s origin story, not mark the end of the Tomb Raider series. This game is much darker than it’s previous iterations. We see Lara fighting against herself as she tries to avoid becoming a villain after triggering the apocalypse. Lara must explore a vast open world filled with new tombs and puzzles to solve. With tons of new stealth abilities, Lara must learn to use the jungle to her advantage in order to avoid calamity.

During an E3 demo, I got the chance to play through one of the new tomb levels which featured a bit of old and new gameplay. I got the chance to dive right in and swim through some watery depths avoiding piranhas and falling debris during my swim, all while trying to keep Lara’s lungs filled with oxygen. Shadow of the Tomb Raider plays just like its predecessors when it comes to the tombs. It’s the new stealth gameplay coupled with tomb puzzles that makes Shadow of the Tomb Raider a game to keep an eye out for.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to capture any gameplay myself but I did include this video from Gamespot that should illustrate the new gameplay featured in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Created by a team of veteran Tomb Raider developers at Eidos-Montréal, in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, Shadow of the Tomb will be available on September 14, 2018, for the Xbox One family of devices, PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, and Windows PC/Steam®.†
