It’s been awhile since I found a movie that just made me absolutely happy.
The Boxtrolls is simply the best family movie I have seen this year!
I can’t remember just where I caught a first glimpse at The Boxtrolls but I definitely knew I would be excited for it’s eventual release. The Boxtrolls is a stop motion animated move which focuses around an orphaned boy named Eggs, who is raised by a group of monsters called boxtrolls. And this group of monsters are all named after the logos they have emblazoned on the boxes they each wear. Hence the name—boxtrolls. The boxtrolls live in a spectacular underground cave beneath the town of Cheesebridge and have a tenacity for engineering. While all may appear to be peaceful amongst the boxtrolls, the citizens of Cheesebridge actually live in fear of them. They eventually seek the assistance of Archibald Snatcher to capture every last boxtroll while secretly plotting something a little more dastardly. And even though it’s apparent you, me, and most likely the entire world that Eggs doesn’t quite belong with the boxtrolls, it’s ultimately up to Eggs to determine between fact and fiction.
From the incredibly detailed scenes to the impeccable voice acting, this movie will have you immersed and engrossed with each and every character. The Boxtrolls might be a worthy candidate for IMAX 3D in order to fully appreciate the intricate details behind each and every set piece and character. Additionally, The Boxtrolls is filled with some recognizable names as well like Ben Kingsley (Archibald Snatcher), Simon Pegg (Herbert Trubshaw), Nick Frost (Mr. Trout), Tracy Morgan (Mr. Gristle) and Jared Harris (Lord Portley-Rind). Each and every character is quirky in their own way and together comprise the unique community of Cheesebridge. From the cheese loving Tasting Room members that don the exclusive White Hats to the Red Hat henchmen of Archibald Snatcher. Even Winnie, voiced by Elle Fanning, was a little unexpected. She has a love for the macabre and never holds anything back when it comes to speaking her mind.
Come to think of it, The Boxtrolls is about a whole lot more than the trailers may actually make it seem. At times The Boxtrolls got extremely serious. It was able to tackle issues of prejudice, segregation and adversity without feeling preachy or like an afternoon special. This is where The Boxtrolls shines. It is a movie that you can take an entire family that is hilariously funny and I can assure you that your entire family will have a really good time.
If you’re a fan of stop motion movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Para-Norman or Coraline, you will absolutely love The Boxtrolls. It’s a refreshing, quirky movie that will have you laughing throughout the entirety of the movie. From the breath taking scenes, the plot and the after credit scenes, you will appreciate all the hard work that went into creating this amazingly wonderful film.
In case you want a few more peeks at the movie before heading out to the theater, I have included a few featurettes below. The first featurette takes a look at “What makes a family?”. It deeps a little deeper into Eggs’s relationship with the other both trolls and how this untraditional family embodies characteristics of a typical family. The second video is a scene from The Boxtrolls where Winnie enlightens Eggs on reality.

More About The Boxtrolls:

When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnifred (Elle Fanning).
