Franken Berry, Boo Berry and Count Chocula will always have a place in our sugar-induced, morning cereal hearts, but now Beetlejuice, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and other retro, horror and comic characters are joining the breakfast ranks. Creators of Funko Pop! vinyl figures, Funko is upping the cereal ante with a collection of 40 pop culture-themed cereals, FunkO’s, debuting this summer.
In partnership Warner Bros. Consumer Products, DC’s Super Heroes Batman and Batgirl, The Lord of the Rings (Gollum), Huckleberry Hound, Beetlejuice, New Line Cinema’s IT, horror classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th and other properties, the multigrain FunkO’s will hit select retailers throughout the year, including GameStop, Hot Topic, FYE, Entertainment Earth and directly through Funko.
Each box, which retails for $7.99, will include a corresponding Pocket Pop! figure that cereal grubbers will have to dig out and a back panel of themed activities, puzzles and games.
“Funko, purveyors of pop culture and all things awesome, is committed to helping you start the day off right by putting the fun back in breakfast with FunkO’s,” said the company in a recent blog post. “And as we all know from Saturday morning commercials, every breakfast starts with a bowl of brightly colored cereal that comes out of a box with a really cool mascot on the front and a prize inside!”
The first wave of sugary FunkO’s, available in July, includes: Mega Man (GameStop), Cuphead & Mugman (Hot Topic), Retro Freddy (Funko), A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger, Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees (FYE) and The Lord of the Rings (BoxLunch). In August, the second wave hits, including Cuphead ‘Don’t Deal with the Devil’ (GameStop), IT’s Pennywise (Hot Topic), Huckleberry Hound (Funko), Batman, Batgirl (Entertainment Earth), Beetlejuice (BoxLunch) and Cthulhu (BAM!).
The company will release additional cereals and Pocket Pop! figures throughout the year.
