Caveman. They say that they got to The Bowery Electric at 1, began drinking at 3, and the show started at 8. Well, they got me beat. Damn day job. But the open bar during the show was an immediate comfort. “Drink some whiskey,” said singer Matt Iwanusa to the intimate full room at Bowery Electric. “It’s on us.” And hot damn did they play well in the midst of their binge.
So, Caveman. Right. They’ve been quiet these days, nothing new since their excellent self-titled sophomore album dropped back in 2013. But last night was something special. Caveman played a set comprised of brand new songs off their upcoming album, Otero War, set for a summer release. Guys! That’s an early preview! It’s only March! But, Caveman, it sounds so good. File under reflective rock with layers of synth and beautiful vocals. It sounds all calm and mellow, but there’s a certain degree of angst that gets the emotions all swirling and fists pumping. And the band drank right out of a Jameson’s bottle on stage.
