CW’s Charmed reboot returns this Fall. During New York Comic Con (NYCC) 2018, we got the chance to chat with cast members Melonie Diaz (Mel), Sarah Jeffery (Maggie), and Madeleine Mantock (Macy) about the upcoming series reboot. For those who might be unfamiliar with the series, let me catch you up a bit. Charmed follows a trio of sisters with great Wiccan powers. The witches are the charmed ones, the ones destined to save humanity from the Apocolypse.
The reboot follows Mel and Maggie as they lead normal college lives while dealing with a bevy of social issues including consent and sexism. However, following their mother’s death, the sisters eventually learn that they have a third older sister, Macy. They also learn that their mother was a witch who bound their powers when they were born. She was a powerful witch who was in the process of unbinding their powers on the night she died. Mel, Maggie, and Macy are the destined ‘charmed ones’ and descendants of a long line of powerful witches.
Mel can freeze time. Maggie can hear other’s thoughts. Macy manifests telekinetic powers. They each clearly have some hesitation in the beginning. It appears that magical forces thrust the trio into the whole situation. The underworld has awakened. They know that the ‘charmed ones’ have returned. “We have to watch our backs the whole time. And there is not a whole lot of time to question anything because you have to prove yourself again and again that ‘No, actually, I am a witch and the stakes are high'”, recalls Madeleine who plays the analytical Macy. She believes in the sciences and therefore believes that everything has a logical explanation, including all of the magical occurrences. Whether it is a piece of a demon or a sample of goo, Macy will be able to flex her analytical muscles and conduct experiments every now and again. “It is fun to tie in those things where you can go: ‘It has this component and, in the real world, this component reacts with this and so if we use enough of it we might be able to get rid of it.”
And on top of that, Macy also struggles with how to fit in with Mel and Maggie. Trying to be a friend and sister to them. We quickly learn that Mel is much less welcoming than Maggie is and is pretty passionate and strongwilled. “[She] and Mel are so similar, they butt heads a lot. The family dynamic is pretty interesting in the first few episodes.”, recalls Melonie Diaz.
At its core, the new Charmed reboot is about sisterhood. “We are the heroes of our own lives. We are all learning to be better sisters on top of learning to be witches and fighting demons. And in that, we’re kick-ass women.”, says Melonie. The women are all learning how to trust each other while dealing with issues that are prevalent for women today. It will definitely be interesting to see how they will be able to tackle the supernatural with reality.
The reboot is shaping up to be a must-watch for Charmed fans. The episodes will begin airing on Sunday nights starting on October 14th, 2018 on the CW, please check your local listings.
