SDCC 2014 Rewind: Skylanders Trap Team Overview & Exclusive Wolfgang Interview

During San Diego Comic Con 2014, we got the chance to check out Activision’s upcoming Skylanders Trap Team™.  If you’re unfamiliar or new to the Skylanders franchaise, simply put Skylanders essentially created the Toys to Life™ genre of gaming. In previous Skylanders games, players would place figures onto a portal and play with said character within the game. Skylanders Trap Team goes a step further and allows players to actually do the inverse and trap characters into crystal figures.

Skylanders Trap Team introduces a ground-breaking innovation that lets Portal Masters “trap” the most wanted villains in Skylands and then play as them in the game in the battle for good. The game offers an unprecedented new addition to the game’s play pattern in the form of Traptanium Traps. When this new type of toy is placed directly into the Traptanium Portal™, Portal Masters can “capture” a variety of special villains from the game and magically transport them from Skylands into the real world.

During our brief chat with John Paul Karliak, the voice of Wolfgang in Skylanders Trap Team, we learned what it was like to play a baddie. Wolfgang is ready to free all the villians trapped within Cloudcracker Prison. While the Doom Raiders appreciate the sentiment, they have their own ideas. Wolfgang is a badass british rocker equipped with this harpsichord type weapon that shoots undead notes.  The neat part of Skylanders Trap Team is the fact that you can capture the baddies in Traptanium™. But since we see Wolfgang almost everywhere, we’re wondering if there could ever be a Wolfgang figurine in the near future.

More about Skylanders Trap Team

In Skylanders Trap Team, Kaos continues his ongoing quest to rule over Skylands. He has discovered the location of the legendary Cloudcracker Prison — a fortress built entirely out of the magical substance TraptaniumTM and home to Skylands’ most nefarious villains. In an attempt to build his own army of foes, Kaos blows up the prison, releasing the most wanted villains and blasting shards of Traptanium to Earth in the form of Traps. Now it’s up to Portal Masters to recapture all of the escaped villains using powerful Traptanium Traps and defeat Kaos before it’s too late!
Each Skylanders Trap Team character and villain has a unique personality and power that kids will want to play with again and again in both the real and game worlds. The Skylanders franchise continues to bring imaginative characters to fans, such as Kaboom, who uses his Red Hot Traptanium Cannon to blast evil in the broadsides; and Pain-Yatta, a giant piñata who can barf an endless supply of candy that sweetens any battle!

The Skylanders Trap Team Starter Pack will be available on October 5th in North America, October 10th in Europe and October 2nd in Australia on the following platforms: a variety of iPad®, Kindle Fire and Android tablets; Xbox One and Xbox 360 games and entertainment systems from Microsoft; PlayStation®4 system; PlayStation®3 system; Nintendo’s Wii™ system and Nintendo’s Wii U™ system. A different, unique adventure also will be available on the Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system.

About the Skylanders® Franchise

The award-winning, $2 billion Skylanders franchise pioneered the Toys-to-Life category in 2011 with the debut of Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure®. The game originated a new play pattern that seamlessly bridged physical and virtual worlds across multiple platforms. In October 2012, Skylanders Giants™ further evolved the genre and added the mega-sized Giant Skylanders and LightCore® characters to the collection of interaction figures. Skylanders SWAP Force launched in October 2013 and introduced an all-new play pattern – swapability. The Skylanders franchise was the top selling kids’ videogame of 20131, and is now one of the top 20 videogame franchises of all time2. Skylanders Trap Team, the newest installment due out in North America on October 5, 2014, reverses the magic of bringing toys to life – incredibly letting kids pull characters out of the digital world into the physical world.
